Initially from Montmorency he joined Collingwood from Preston U18. He was snared by Collingwood at the 1998 national draft under the father-son rule as his father Rod played for the Magpies. His neat left foot disposal and ability to collect goals were distinctive traits and he forced his way into the senior team early in 2000. But the following season was spent entirely in the reserves apart from one senior appearance.
