Vale Ron Moylan

1968-69

12 games 9 goals

The Collingwood Football Club would like to acknowledge the passing of former player Ron Moylan.

Ron was a talented, fast and strong half-forward flanker with a keen eye for goal. He played 12 games for us across the 1968-69 seasons, kicking nine goals, as well as playing a further 34 games (for 42 goals) in the reserves.

Ron was born and grew up in West Heidelberg, and came to Victoria Park in 1968 after a couple of very successful seasons with West Ivanhoe CYMS. He managed nine senior games in his debut season, and was also named the Club’s Best Local Recruit.

But he found opportunities harder to come by after that, and left midway through the 1970 season after managing only three further senior games. He later played with Tongala, Wagga Wagga and VFA club Preston.

A teacher by profession and blessed with a lively and engaging personality, Ron moved to the Gold Coast and spent much of his life pursuing his great love, travel. He travelled widely, taught overseas and worked in a number of different jobs, including managing the entertainment on cruise ships.

Former teammate Danny Hibbert, who remained lifelong friends with Ron, described him as “a real fun person who loved life and enjoying himself to the fullest”. “He was a great and generous friend, who would do anything he could to help when needed,” Danny said.

His sole surviving daughter, Kerry, said in a recent Facebook post that Ron was “an adventurous traveller who lived his life to the beat of his own drum.”

But he remained a passionate Collingwood fan throughout his life, and would catch up with former teammates whenever he returned to Australia.

Ron had settled on Kochang Island in Thailand, and he passed away there late in May after a short illness. He is survived by his daughter Kerry, his brother Gary, sisters Janet and Lorraine and his four grandchildren.

The Board, management, staff, coaches and players of the Collingwood Football Club would like to acknowledge Ron Moylan’s contribution to our club. Our thoughts are with his family and friends from Collingwood and beyond.

Side by side.
