Match Report

Collingwood had another win against Fitzroy, though on the merits neither side could claim an advantage. The game was not a pleasant one. A good deal of feeling was shown, and in one or two instances players were close to the fighting stage.

Laxton was injured early in the match. Ile was suffering from concussion, and had to be taken off the field. Fitzroy had a lead in the first quarter with 1-4 to 1-2, and that was the only stage at which they finished in front, though Collingwood's lead was due to superior shooting rather than better general play. Fitzroy marked rather better than Collingwood, and showed plenty of dash, but tumbled a bit.

The match had really to be won in the last quarter. That term was fiercely contested, and one or two players seemed to run amok. With only a few minutes to go Fitzroy were 11 points ahead, but a wonderful rally by Collingwood won the match.

There was only a minute left for play when Mutch marked and passed the ball to Saunders, who, kicking a goal for Collingwood from 40 yards out, won the game by three points, the final being: - COLLINGWOOD 11 goals 11 behinds (77 points), FITZROY 10 goals 14 behinds (74 points).
