Little is known of John Maddern, who first appeared at Victoria Park in pre-season games for the Pies against Collingwood Juniors and Heidelberg in 1893. He made his debut in Round 6 against Williamstown, and was named on a wing against Footscray the following week, but his performances seem to have attracted few comments. He was named in several other match day squads throughout the season, and at one stage The Argus noted that Collingwood had been 'weakened' by his absence. It's not known where he played footy before or after his Collingwood days.
