A tall, sturdy forward who learned his football at VFA club Port Melbourne. He was a heady player with great determination. A brilliant all-round player who was centre half-forward and one of the best afield in the losing grand final side of 1918 and centre half-back in the team that won the flag a year later. He represented Victoria in 1919 then returned to the VFA where he was involved in a bizarre sequence of events in 1922. He was appointed coach of Hawthorn, but Port threatened that he had to play with them that season. It was agreed he could coach Hawthorn during the week, but had to play with Port. He actually played twice for Port against the side which he coached!
