COLLINGWOOD IN FORM. MELBOURNE OVERWHELMED.
Very little interest was evinced in the game between Collingwood and Melbourne at Melbourne. The home team proved no match for the better equipped and smarter Collingwood side, who excelled in every department, their sure passing and effective stab-kicking completely paralysing Melbourne, who by comparison were slow. Collingwood immediately the ball was bounced passed it out to Lee, who with a long kick scored a goal. The football throughout the quarter was scrambly, and although Melbourne for a time played just as well as their opponents, they could not get past the visitors' half-back line. Individually the did many fine things, but could not sustain the effort, and at quarter-time Collingwood had four goals 4 behinds to 2 goals. Melbourne went to pieces in the second term, and Collingwood, playing a fast and dashing game, did what they liked. They put on 5 goals 8 behinds to 1 behind. One goal, goal, a place kicked by R. Lee, being nearly 60 yards.
The visitors continued to increase their tally after the interval, Wraith scoring the tenth and eleventh goals, while Lee, whose kicking was not so accurate as usual, quickly snapped the twelfth. Towards the close of the term a pretty bit of handballing by Tonkin and Kenny resulted in Melbourne butting a goal, their first since the opening quarter, and at three-quarter time Collingwood had 12-24 to 3-3.
Thus far Collingwood's goal shooting had been faulty, but it improved considerably, and eight goals were added with only one behind. In three minutes of the last quarter Collingwood scored four goals, Wraith, who was marking and kicking beautifully, getting three of them. In a quick rally Kenny and Love got goals for Melbourne, but Collingwood came again, and Lee scored three times in succession, the final figures being: - COLLINGWOOD 20 goals 25 behinds - 145 points. MELBOURNE 5 goals 6 behinds - 36 points.
For the winners Lumsden played a splendid game, especially when roving, while in the ruck Seddon and Walkton did a lot of work. Wraith (6 goals), Lee (7 goals), and Curtis were the pick of the forwards, and the best of the others were Drummond, P. Wilson, and Twomey. No one worked harder for Melbourne than Warne-Smith. Others who played well were Matthews (following), McLean (half-back), McKenzie (wing), Lilley, Coulter, Bacquie, Kenny and Bodington.
