Collingwood's remarkable, against-the-odds win over a seemingly unbeatable Melbourne in the 1958 Grand Final remains one of the biggest upsets in VFL/AFL history. Not only did the win secure for the Magpies a then record 13th Premiership, it also protected the club's cherished record of four-flags-in-a-row, set by the fabled Machine teams of 1927-30. As such, it has gone down in Collingwood folklore as arguably the greatest of all the club's Premiership victories. Now, the Collingwood Football Club and the Collingwood Archives Committee are celebrating the 60th anniversary of that wonderful achievement with a special function to be held at the Holden Centre. And you're invited. The third annual Forever Presents ... event will be devoted to 'The Miracle of '58'. Host and club historian Michael Roberts will interview some survivors of that historic triumph, including three of our best players on the day, wingman Ken Turner, champion rover Thorold Merrett and the brilliant Bill Serong. Those former champs will take us into the mindset of the players in the lead-up to the game - when nobody gave them a chance - and into the rooms before the game and at half-time, when coach Phonse Kyne did some of his finest work. We'll also relive the highlights of the day by screening the colour newsreel footage of the game. And there will be a special display of 1958-related memorabilia unveiled in the foyer beforehand - including, of course, the 1958 Premiership Cup. The event is being held on Wednesday July 11 at 6pm (for 6.15pm) in the lounge at the Holden Centre (main entrance), but you MUST register beforehand, as space is limited to the first 100 people to confirm. Doors will open at 5.45 Please contact us at [email protected] to confirm your place for this celebration of one of the most magical moments in Collingwood history.
