A chunky redhead from Western Australian club South Fremantle who was one of the game's most decorated players winning a Brownlow Medal, the Simpson Medal and two Tassie Medals. Critics voiced doubts over whether he would make it in Victoria because of a deficiency in pace, but he had tremendous judgement and could place his jarrah-like torso in position to win the ball consistently. He emphasised his talent by winning the Brownlow in his first year, which was a tribute to his attacking style from the back pocket. A regular selection in the WA team for State of Origin matches, he was tipped to join the newly formed Eagles, but instead he went to the Bears in a big money deal. Was eventually swapped to Collingwood in the November draft of 1991, but he managed only two games in his solitary season at Victoria Park. His long sleeved guernsey was a familiar sight in the VFL and he always played with arms covered because of the scars he had received in a fire as a child.
