SYSTEM PREVAILS. By: OLD BOY The game between Collingwood and South Melbourne might be called "system v. disorganisation” and system prevailed. Individually the Southerners played well, but there was no organisation, no combination, and the individual effort was thrown away. Collingwood won the game by 12-12 to 5-14, and they played fine football. There is a point about the Magpies' play just now, which strikes one, and that is the daring of their defenders. They force the game well, but against strong team this maybe their undoing. It would be wise to remember this fact when meeting Fitzroy on Saturday. F. Leach, who seems to be getting back into his fine form of last year, Pannam (who beat Howson), and Allan (who beat Scott) were a fine centre line. M'Cormack was the best of the backs and Monohan, A. Leach (back), Fall, Hailwood (ruck), Howell, Tulloch, Pears, Farrell, and E. Lockwood (who was left unwatched all day, and kicked four goals) all did well in attack, A. Adamson, King, M'Donough (back), Scott, Hickey and Howson (though beaten on the day as a centre line), Goding, Rippon (forward), Windley (roving), Fogarty and Pleass (ruck), and a South Melbourne College boy, M'Dougall, a youngster in his teens, all did well for South Melbourne. After the game the Collingwood players presented their hon. secretary, Mr. E. Copeland, with a diamond ring, in recognition of his services to the club. Messrs, Reazley, Tuckey, and Wilkins, M.L.A's, and Mr. T. Crane, president South Melbourne F. C. were present.
