The ex-Mulgrave player became one of the League's top rovers. His workrate around the packs was exceptional and from the early stages of his career he displayed the knack of kicking goals just when they were needed. Mitchell's possession winning skills were unsurpassed and he was a fierce competitor in packs. As the Swans' financial woes became more publicised Mitchell became a prime target for opposition clubs seeking a rover. Collingwood won his services in a deal that earned Mitchell the label of "Million Dollar Man". An ordinary season ended with him being released to Carlton after just 12 months.
