From Xavier College, where he was rated the best product since Andrew Gowers. He had played only school football before joining the Magpies but he adapted quickly. He applied himself to any task and was rushed into the senior side because of Collingwood's lack of defenders and was often required to handle bigger players in his first year but was an outstanding performer. Early in 1997 he injured his back and ribs after a clash with Essendon's Dean Wallis and his form tapered. Moved to Sydney in 2000 and had an outstanding season at centre half-back, winning the Swan best and fairest. Troubled by hamstring injuries in 2001 and missed another seven games in 2002. Schauble bounced back to top form and fitness in 2003 after taking over the full-back position from the retired Andrew Dunkley. A bizarre hamstring injury waylaid him at the start of 2004 when he aimed a kick at the ball and badly injured the leg. He missed 14 weeks, but returned for the closing 10 matches and added his usual measure of experience to defence.
