THE FOOTBALL: "SEASON. MATCHES FOR PREMIERSHIP. BY FOLLOWER. '
Despite the railway block, large crowds of spectators assembled at most of the football matches on Saturday. Carlton had an engagement at Geelong, but no train being available the match did not take place. It was impossible to get the Carlton players away by boat, and the match will doubtless be played on a day to be fixed. Public patronage was about fairly divided between the matches Melbourne v. Fitzroy and Collingwood v. South Melbourne.
At Victoria-park, Collingwood simply smothered South Melbourne, who wore hopelessly beaten nil through. Commencing with 11 lead of 21 points in the first quarter, the home team materially increased their advantage in each succeeding period. They were 41 points ahead at half time, 58 at the end of three-quarter time, and 65 at the finish. Even where the whole team on the winning side played well, Condon stood out us the undisputed champion of the match, his play to Incoll being consummately skilful. The victory of South Melbourne over Melbourne, collaterally with the result of this game, and the pronounced defeat of Collingwood by Carlton on the previous Saturday, makes Carlton's "form" particularly high class. Collingwood scored 13.14 to 3.6.
